Day 12 MS Roald amundsen

Woke to find ourselves in Drakes passage.
We must have hit open water about 3am as we were woken by the wind and pitching and rolling of the boat.
Enough to clear the benches and tables in our cabin and ensure Liz then stayed awake until daybreak.

The captain tells us that around midnight the executive decision was made to not land at Cape Horn.
In his words the weather had turned foul and it would be very hard to get close enough to land.
So they made a direct line to Drakes passage and if all goes well we will be in Antarctica 7.30am on the 4th.
We will arrive at Yankees landing.

Our lectures continued this morning although the speakers sat to deliver their lectures.
Most people managed to be there although it was noted the scopolamine patches behind most people’s ears combat the sea sickness.

One lovely highlight today has been watching the enormous albatross that insist on following the boat.
Very difficult to photograph, so I will have to rely on mental photography

Here’s to a little sleep tonight and a more settled day tomorrow as we continue to cross Drakes passage.
